Amazing Maxim #1

Beginning to write begins with reading! Reading literature that “challenges and expands your thinking, vocabulary, and style is imperative to your own literary voice” (Pavlick). If you want to be a great writer, you must be a great reader. Start where you are and “grow into” more challenging and ever more exciting and riveting books.

“Only a generation of readers will spawn a generation of writers.” ― Steven Spielberg

Have something to say! You have a message because you are a unique creation of God. You are the only person who is the foremost expert about you. Write about your experiences and thoughts. Learn, grow, and share important discoveries about life with others.

Guided practice makes perfect! Learn the writing process and let it work its magic as your ideas are sharpened and your ability to communicate effectively is transformed.

· Pre-writing >>> Brainstorming, researching, concept mapping, outlining

· Writing >>> Rough draft to final draft

· Revision >>> Add, rearrange, remove, replace

· Editing >>> Check for spelling, grammar, punctuation, clarity, word usage

· Publishing>>> Share it!

Writing is recursive with rewards! Repeating loops within the writing process allows us freedom as we write and creates both a better product and a better writer. It’s a win-win! With enough guided and persistent practice, one fine day your words will flow deftly onto the page, capturing an epic thought with beauty, clarity, and power. This is the moment. The moment when the writing craft becomes art.

“It is only a novel... or, in short, only some work in which the greatest powers of the mind are displayed, in which the most thorough knowledge of human nature, the happiest delineation of its varieties, the liveliest effusions of wit and humour, are conveyed to the world in the best-chosen language.”― Jane Austen, Northanger Abbey
